Peter Straker first shot to fame as the character HUD in 1968, in the original production of the notorious, era-defining musical HAIR – the first to portray nudity on the London stage. Today He has theatre credits as diverse as The Rocky Horror Show, Ken Hill’s The Original Phantom Of The Opera, The Wiz, Piaf, The Rat Pack and Cinderella.
Variously known as the “Black Bowie”, Freddie Mercury’s close friend or, on TV, as Devlin in the hit series Connie with Stephanie Beacham and as Commander Sharrel in Doctor Who’s “Destiny of the Daleks”, Peter Straker has enjoyed a four-decade career across theatre, film, TV and music.
He has, in his music career, been a cast member in Pete Townshend’s stage musical Tommy and he has collaborated with the Alan Parsons Project on their album I Robot and, most memorably, with Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé, on their now legendary Barcelona. Recorded and Produced by Freddie Mercury on several of his albums, Peter Straker returns to his rock roots in his new show, BLACK MAGIC.
The master of ceremonies conjures up an eclectic selection of music, including songs by: The Rolling Stones; Queen; Randy Newman; and from Straker’s own albums. This will be performed alongside a sensational Rock Band.
Audiences should expect Fire, Ice, Darkness and Light and pure unadulterated pleasure. BLACK MAGIC is fast, furious, funny, indefinable entertainment.
There’s a classically trained piano player, a mean guitar, and a cool double bass. At the front of the stage, a dressing room area, with a table bearing an assorted collection of alcohol. Jaques Brel liked to drink!
And then Peter Straker takes the stage: dressed in a trench coat and trilby, this green eyed Jamaican occupies the stage as if he were born to it – and when he starts to sing you know he was!
Straker is in full blown theatrical mode in “Amsterdam”, embodying the darkness and menace in Brel’d lyrics, yet soft and tender in “If you go away”. The way he interprets the words of Brel’s songs, bringing them to life with a vividness, makes you hear them as if for the first time…
